BJJ on Auckland's North Shore — A Beginner's Guide to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Unity MMA

Your First BJJ Class — A Beginner's Guide

Published by Unity MMA · Albany, North Shore Auckland

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is one of the fastest-growing martial arts in New Zealand — and for good reason. It's strategic, technical, and effective regardless of size or strength. If you're on Auckland's North Shore and considering starting BJJ, this guide covers everything you need to know before walking in the door at Unity MMA.

What Is BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a ground-based martial art focused on controlling an opponent using leverage and technique rather than strength. It was developed from Judo and traditional Japanese jujitsu, and popularised globally through its effectiveness in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition — including the UFC.

It's often called "the gentle art" or "human chess" — because a successful BJJ practitioner can control and submit opponents significantly larger than themselves using technique and positional control.

Gi vs No-Gi — What's the Difference?

Gi BJJ is practised wearing the traditional BJJ uniform — a heavy jacket and pants (the "gi"). The gi adds a grip-based element: you can grab your opponent's collar, lapels, and sleeves, which opens up a wider variety of techniques.

No-Gi BJJ is practised in shorts and a rashguard, with no uniform to grip. It's faster-paced and more closely mirrors wrestling and submission grappling. Many MMA athletes prefer No-Gi because of its direct application to fighting.

At Unity MMA, we offer both. Beginners can start in either — most coaches recommend starting in Gi to build a stronger technical foundation.

What to Expect at Your First BJJ Class

Your first class at Unity MMA will begin with a warm-up, then move into technique drilling — a coach demonstrates a position or a sweep, and you practice it with a partner. The emphasis is always on technique over strength. You'll never be put in a position where you're expected to "figure it out" alone.

Live rolling (grappling practice) happens at the end of class. As a beginner, you'll be paired with an experienced, responsible partner who will guide rather than dominate. Nobody is here to hurt you — that's not the culture at Unity MMA.

Do I Need to Be Fit to Start?

No. BJJ will get you fit — you don't need to be fit to start. Many members begin with no martial arts background and find that fitness comes naturally from consistent training. The first few weeks will be physically demanding as your body adapts, but the learning curve makes it compelling enough to keep coming back.

How Long Does It Take to Get Good at BJJ?

BJJ is notorious for being a long-term journey. A blue belt — the first level of advancement — typically takes 2-3 years of consistent training. A black belt can take 10+ years. That said, you'll feel the progress from your very first month. Beginners often describe the point at which they successfully execute their first sweep or submission as a deeply satisfying milestone.

Consistency is everything. Training 2-3 times per week produces noticeable improvement within 3 months.
